The Fabric Geeks - 2

I have a few more print to show you from my latest adventure with The Fabric Geeks.  I have to say this was such a fun experience and challenging.  Usually, I test pattern and I look for the perfect fabric.  This time it was the opposite, I had to find the perfect pattern to show case this amazing fabric.  It turn out that I went ahead and tried a few patterns that I got and never got around to use them.

In case you missed it, I went into the fabric details (i.e weight) in my previous post. One thing I did not mention is the other types of fabric also available during the preorder.  PUL stand for Polyurethane Laminate.  Which means the fabric is laminated with a polyurethane making it waterproof.  So it is ideal for the outside of cloth diapers and diaper cover. But you can use it for a lot more than that. I used the Chewie PUL for wet bags to use at camp!

The Fabric Geeks also offers print in Woven and French Terry. I still have to try those two! The prints presented in my previous post and below are all cotton lycra knit.

Pokémon Go, raise your hand if you are a fan!  We are not big fans here, the apps for my Ipad was always crashing so the kids lost interest very quickly. In our house the Pokémon cards game is huge.  I still don’t understand the different powers but my sons are all about carrying those cards around and trading them at school.  So when I show them The Fabric Geeks line up, this Pokecos was at the top of the list.

This one feature the Pokecos Panel and Main cotton lycra.  I really love the colours of the main fabric for the Pokecos, it so bright.  I will probably order some more of this print to make something for my youngest.  I used the Heidi and Finn All you Need Jammies Pajamas for this one.

So if you have been reading me for a while, you know that my son is quite skinny.  I make 100% of his sleeping wear and this pattern was used a few times for both girls and boys already, just never feature on this blog yet!

To stay with the Pokémon theme, I had the chance to test the Chansey Panel and Poke Glitz main cotton lycra. 

The main fabric has also bright colours.  For this one I tried a new pattern, I bought it a few months ago when it was released but did not had the chance to try it.  It is the Hibernis from Sofilanjtes. (affiliate link). 

The cowl is not attached to the shirt so it can be wear separately.  This was a quick project, I will definitely use this pattern again.

Surprisingly, I kept one print to make something for myself- Rebel Naveen. I got my inspiration from the talented laddies in The Fabric Geeks testing group and a recent blog tour.  So I decided to make the jump and try to make my own underwear set. 

I used the Scrundlewear from SUAT and Agility tank Bra from 5 out of 4 (affiliate link).  The amazing part is that I was able to complete this project with one diaper/panty panel.  I used a little bit of another fabric for the back of the bra but the rest was from the panel. The panel size is 23'' by 35''.  I decided to put the design at the back of the panty but I could also have it on the front of the bra.

This was my first time using both patterns. I’m definitely planning to reuse the Agility Tank for a batting suit or yoga top. Unfortunately, there is not enough support for a regular sport bra. 

For the panty, I made the boy cut version.  I will definitely try again this one as well, there is more options to try out.  I used Fold Over Elastic for both item in case you wonder. I really love this type of elastic, it give such a clean finish.


Overall this was an amazing experience and I’m really happy with the end results.  Thank you Janice and Cheyenne for including me in this Epic preorder. I had a blast!

The Fabric Geeks

A few weeks ago, I joined The Fabric Geeks strike off tester team.  I’m very excited about this new adventure with The Fabric Geeks and I was lucky enough to try 5 prints from current preorder of custom fabric.   

The Fabric Geeks is not new to this blog you can see older designs, some of which are still available on the website Thinker bell panel, ESME main fabric & panel, finding Dory.  I also featured The Fabric Geeks custom design on my latest guest post on Love Notions Blog (Angry Birds and Super Heroes).

The Fabric Geeks was founded in 2014 out of Nova Scotia and moved to Ontario over the summer. For personal reasons, the current owner will pass on the flag after this Epic Round.  She is currently running multiple prints for her last time! Sniff, sniff… I was picking up my fabric 10 minutes away from my house.

This is definitely an Epic Round, I had the chance to try out a few of them.  First up, is “I Ain’t Afraid” in cotton Lycra.  The cotton lycra 4 way stretch vary from 230-250 gsm depending on the round and approximately 56-60” wide (including selvage, approximately 54” of printed design).  Just to help you here on the fabric details, I order a lot from L’Oiseau fabric and the weight of their stenzo line is 195 gsm and their jersey knit line is between 200 and 220 gsm.  So The Fabric Geeks cotton lycra is heaver.

The Ghostbuster fabric was selected by my middle child.  I decided to use my all-time favorite tee, the Rowan tee from Titchy Threads.  I have multiple tee patterns but I always come back to this one.  The fit is perfect for this skinny boy! I like the contrasting red details on the sleeve and neckline (the Rowan is on sale 25% until Oct 23^rd  the code is available on the Facebook group).

Lately, I have been using a lot of panels, thanks to The Fabric Geeks I discover how fun it is to use panels, it started last year with my five Christmas Peanut Christmas PJs.  

My second fabric choice during testing was the “Hufflepuff – Drive Stick” panel.  My daughter has been reading the Harry Potter series and I did myself including the latest one.  The Harry Potter collection includes all the Wizards houses Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin  and Ravenclaw .  I paired this panel with the solid black knit (95% cotton and 5% lycra) also offered from the The Fabric Geeks retail section. For this one, I used a pattern that I had in my pattern collection for a while.  The Love Notions Wrigley Raglan (affiliates link) which turned out to be a perfect match.  This one is not staying in the wardrobe very long after wash (huge sale at Love Notions 50% of everything until Oct 21. 2016, no code required)!

Both fabric are currently available in preorder until Oct 31, 2016. Please note the estimated production/delivery for each print is between 5-12 weeks but it is all worth the wait!

Bonjour, je partage avec vous ma nouvelle aventure avec The Fabric Geeks.  J’ai joint l’équipe de testeurs de tissu et j’ai eu la chance de faire l’essai de la collection en précommande.

Les tissus de TheFabric Geeks ne sont pas nouveau sur ce blog,  vous pouvez voir les tissus que j’ai utilisés dans le passé:  ici, ici et ici. Certains sont encore disponibles sur le site.  J’ai également utilisé le tissu The Fabric Geeks lors de ma participation sur le Blog de Love Notions (Angry Birds et Super héros).

The Fabric Geeks a été fondé en 2014 en Nouvelle-Écosse et relocalisé en Ontario au cours de l'été.  Pour des raisons personnelles, la propriétaire actuelle passera le drapeau après cette épique collection.  Elle a présentement plusieurs collections en cours étant donné que c'est la dernière fois!  je suis un peu triste de cette situation, puis que la propriétaire habite à moins de 10 minutes de ma maison.

C'est en effet une collection épique, les collections offertes sont extraordinaires  J'ai eu la chance de tester cinq tissus.  Le Cotton Lycra s'étire dans les quatre cotés avec un poids variant de 230 à 250 g/m².  Le tissus à une largeur de 56-60 pouces, donc 54 pouces avec le dessin imprimé.   Pour vous aider à comparer, Je commande souvent chez L'Oiseau Fabric de leur collection Stenzo qui à un poids de 195 g/m² et leur ligne de tricot est entre 200 et 220 g/m².  Dans d'autres mots, le tissu de la collection The Fabric Geeks est un peu plus lourd/épais!

Je débute avec « I Ain't Afraid » en Coton Lycra.  Le tissu de Ghostbuster a été choisi par mon grand garçon.  J’ai laissé les enfants choisir les tissus, mais ce fut très difficile pour eux! Pour ce premier projet j’ai utilisé mon patron de chandail préféré, le Rowan de Titchy Threads.  J’ai plusieurs patron de t-shirt mais je reviens toujours à celui-ci.  L’ajustement est parfait pour ce maigrichon ! J’aime les détails em rouges sur les manches et l’encolure (Le patron est présentement en vente (25 %) jusqu’au 23 octobre avec le code qui est disponible sur le groupe Facebook).

L’automne dernier, J’ai commencé à utiliser des panneaux de tissu lors de ma découverte The Fabric Geeks.   J’avais commandé 5 panneaux pour mes pyjamas de Noël.  Étant donné que j’ai les panneaux, nous avons fait l’essai du “Hufflepuff – Drive Stick” de la collection de Harry Potter.  J’ai utilisé un patron de Love Notions que j’ai depuis un certain temps –lien affilié Wrigley Raglan.  J’ai jumelé le panneau avec le tricot noir (95 % coton et 5 % lycra) aussi disponible sur le site, sous la section «retail».  Ma fille adore le résultat!

Mother Grimms Designs - Dragon Wings

Good day everyone,

Last week, I had my daughter Halloween costume - owl cape.  Today, I'm roaring with a pair of dragon wings.

Furthermore,  I would like to introduce you to a new designer Mother Grimms Designs.  This pattern is the second pattern of her collection the first one was published by One Thimble.

This pattern is a free standing, flexible wing design with "natural" movement. Another great pattern to let your imagination go wild. 

The wings pattern come in three sizes small (approx. 3-5 years) medium (6-10 years) and large (11-15 years).  I made the medium size for my 7 years old. 

I completed my wings using woven fabric but you can also use knit fabric. 

What you will need to complete this project:

• Quilting cotton or jersey (nothing that may melt from steam ironing);
• Fusible fleece;
• Sew in medium - heavy weight interfacing;
• Batting; and
• Synthetic whale boning. 

Synthetic whale boning is the secret behind the "natural" movement of those wings.  Boning is what you use in strapless dress  (i.e wedding dress) or standing men shirt collar.

My boy is very exited and he has been wearing his wings almost everyday since completion.  I think this one is a winner.  I probably need to make another pair for his brother.

La semaine dernière, je vous ai montré mon costume de hibou.  Maintenant, c'est le tour de ma paire d'ailes de dragon.

Pour débuté, je voudrais vous presenter une nouvelle designer Mother Grimms Designs.  Je vous présente aujourd'hui son deuxième patron de sa collection.  Le premier a été publié dans la revue One Thimble.

Ce patron a l'illusion de movement «naturel» et  vous permettera de laisser place à votre imagination!

Le patron est disponible en trois grandeurs : Petit (environ 3 à 5 ans); moyen (6-10 ans); et grand (11-15 ans).  Pour mon grand de 7 ans, j'ai fais la grandeur moyen. J'ai utilise du coton tissé pour mes ailes mais vous pouvez aussi utilise du tricot.

Qu'est ce que vous aurez besoin pour completer ce projet :

• Coton tissé ou tricot ;
• Molleton termocollant ;
• Bourre à piquer ;
• Entoilage ; et
• Bande de baleine au mètre.

La bande de baleine est le secret pour le movement des ailes.  Les bandes de baleine est ce qu'on utilise dans les corsets de robe sans bretelle ou pour tenir les cols de chemise pour homme.

Mummykins & Me - Owl Cape

Summer is already behind us, the leafs have already changed colour.  My favorite fall event is Halloween.  For the past few years, I have been making my kids Halloween costumes.  This year will be a little different, I don’t have a theme for the three of them but I have brand new patterns to show you! 

 

I started this year Halloween costume with the latest pattern from Mummykins & Me (affiliate link) –Cape-tastic.

 

This pattern testing was somewhat different than an usual testing,  the designer gave us the ability to go wild!  I decided to make an Owl as per the pattern instructions since I had an Owl costume in my Pinterest board for years and it is my daughter favorite animal. 

 

This pattern is very versatile and the majority of the testers when wild with the pattern.  With the numerous options, the designer decided to include a section in the instruction with over 34 modification options.  The section includes pictures and instruction on how you can turn your basic cape pattern into nearly any creature!

I invite you to visit the website (affiliate link) to see what the talented testers have made.  I really like the Toothless and butterfly versions.

 

For my version I used felt for the feathers, which required 198 of them!  Cutting the feathers was the longest part of this project.  You will require a fabric that would not fray for the feather.   I made the 8-12 years size for my daughter. 

 

The pattern also comes in adult sizes (XS to XL).   The pattern is currently on sale for $6.50 for the kids version or $8 for the Adult and Kids bundle until October 31, 2016. 

 

Coming up later next week, another Halloween costume using another brand new pattern.

l’été est déjà derrière nous et l’automne a déjà commencé à nous montrer ses belles couleurs.  Mon évènement préféré de l’automne est sans surprise l’halloween.  J’adore faire les costumes pour mes enfants, cette année sera un peu différent car je n’ai pas un thème commun pour les trois. Mais j’ai des nouveaux patrons à vous montrer!

Aujourd'hui, je vous présente mon premier costume d’Halloween.  J’ai fait partie de l’équipe de test pour le dernier patron de Mummykins & Me (lien affilié) – Cap-tastique.

 

Cette période de test fut un peu différente, le désigner nous a donné carte blanche avec le patron  J’ai décidé de faire un hibou selon les instructions du patron, puisque c’est l’animal préféré de ma fille.

 

Ce patron est très polyvalent, la majorité des testeurs ont profité de la carte blanche offerte par le designer.  Ce qui a permis d’inclure dans les instructions plus de 34 options de modification pour vous aider à transformer votre patron de base en presque n’importe quelle créature ! 

 

Je vous invite à visiter le site (lien affilié) pour voir les différentes versions.  J’ai vraiment aimé la version du dragon Thoothless et celui du papillon. 

 

Pour ma version, j’ai utilisé 198 plumes de feutrine!  Vous aurez besoin d’un tissu qui ne s’ effiloche pas pour les plumes.   Couper les plumes, est la plus longue partie de ce projet. 

 

J’ai fait la taille de 8 à 12 ans pour ma fille.  Le patron est aussi disponible en tailles adultes (XS à XL).   Le patron est présentement en vente, jusqu’au 31 octobre 2016, pour 6.50$ pour enfant et 8$ pour le combo adulte et enfant. 

 

À venir, lorsque le patron est disponible, un autre costume d’Halloween.
